What do I need to qualify for a boat loan?
A boat loan is secured by the boat, and approval is borrower specific, based on your credit, income, debts and the boat itself. The minimum credit score is 600. Below 680, the loan amount is capped at $50,000; at 680 and above, that cap no longer applies and the amount depends on the boat and your full scenario. Expect to provide income documents, the purchase agreement and the boat's details, and to carry insurance before funding.
Key takeaways
You've found the boat, and now you want to know whether you can make it work without stretching too thin. I'm Scottie Campbell, Mortgage Advisor and founder of Waymaker Mortgage Company, and I'd rather you understand the numbers than just sign where the dealer points. Boat loans have their own rules, and a few of them make a big difference in what you can borrow.
How a Boat Loan Works
A boat loan is a loan secured by the boat itself, similar in spirit to an auto loan. You borrow the purchase price minus your down payment, the boat serves as collateral, and you repay it over a set term. This is not a home loan, so the rules come from the lender and the boat, not from mortgage guidelines. Approval is borrower specific, which means your credit, income, existing debts and the boat you pick all factor in.
The Credit Numbers That Matter
Here's the straight version:
- 600 is the minimum credit score for the boat loans I can help arrange.
- Below 680, loans are capped at $50,000.
- At 680 and up, that cap no longer applies, and the loan amount depends on the boat and your full scenario.
What that means for you: if your score is in the 600s and the boat you love costs more than $50,000 after your down payment, we have a few levers. A larger down payment, a different boat, or a short plan to lift your score past 680 before you buy. It's never a no. It's always a how.
New, Used, Dealer or Private Sale
Each path works a little differently:
- Dealer purchases usually come with a buyer's order that spells out the price, fees and equipment, which keeps the paperwork simple.
- Private sales need extra care. The lender will want to confirm the title is clean and any existing lien gets paid off at closing.
- Used boats may be reviewed more closely for age, condition and value. On some boats, a lender may ask for a marine survey, which is a professional inspection, much like a home inspection for the water.
What to Have Ready
- Government ID and your income documents (pay stubs, W-2s, or tax returns if you're self-employed)
- The purchase agreement or buyer's order
- Boat details: make, model, year, length and hull identification number
- Trailer and engine details if they're part of the deal
- Proof of insurance before funding
The Full Cost of Owning a Boat
A boat payment is only the start. I kinda like walking through a Total Cost Analysis with boat buyers because the surprises tend to come later:
- Insurance
- Storage, a slip or a trailer and a place to park it
- Fuel and routine maintenance
- Registration and safety gear
- Winterizing and repairs as the boat ages
Folks in Georgetown, TX have lakes close by and plenty of summer to use them, so it's worth knowing the real yearly number before you sign.
Boat Loan or Home Equity?
Some homeowners ask whether to use a HELOC instead. It's a fair question. A home equity line can offer longer terms, but it puts your house up as collateral for a recreational purchase. A boat loan keeps your home out of it. I'll lay both out side by side so you can decide.
And when it comes to rates: Your rate depends on your scenario and the day's market. Reach out and I'll price it for real.

Frequently asked questions
What credit score do I need for a boat loan?
The minimum is 600. If your score is below 680, the loan is capped at $50,000. At 680 and up, the cap no longer applies and the amount depends on the boat and your overall scenario.
My score is 640 and the boat is more than $50,000. What are my options?
You have a few. A larger down payment can bring the loan under $50,000, a different boat may fit better, or we can map out the steps to get your score past 680 first. Can't do it now doesn't mean can't do it ever.
Can I finance a boat from a private seller?
Often, yes. The lender will want to verify the seller's title and make sure any existing loan on the boat is paid off at closing so you receive it free and clear. It takes a little more paperwork than a dealer sale.
Will the lender want an inspection?
On some boats, especially older or larger used boats, a lender may ask for a marine survey. It's a professional inspection of the hull, engine and systems, and it protects you as much as the lender.
Should I use a HELOC instead of a boat loan?
It depends on your goals. A HELOC uses your home as collateral, while a boat loan is secured only by the boat. I'll compare both with a Total Cost Analysis so you can decide which trade-off fits.
What rate can I get on a boat loan?
Your rate depends on your scenario and the day's market. Reach out and I'll price it for real.
